The telly licence

It’s under review apparently - should it be scrapped with the BBC funded by adverts ?
Compared with subscription channels it looks pretty cheap.

I would vote NO, The BBC is the best channel in the World, lets keep it advert Free, I pay the licence fee and feel it is good value,

Correct, the BBC may have its faults, but in no way do my Wife and I want to see advertisements on the BBC Channels and if you go on iPlayer, no payment to watch "catch up" free of advertisments like it is now on ITVx etc.

I dunno if you've ever been to The USA or Canada, The adverts over there make it impossible ( well for me ) to watch anything and, What ever happens in the Merican Way, happens here later, I've noticed Amazon Prime have adverts now but, you can pay to stop them, In protest I stopped Amazon Prime and let them know why

With all the faults that the bbc have at least it's independent !!! can you imagine if it went to the higher bidder and it ended up like 5 news or talk TV even fox in the USA spewing out propaganda for there owners....

In the coming years I think you are going to see a big change in the way you receive and view free TV.

Do you remember when everyone had what were eventually called 'analogue televisions' which depending on when you were born, you manually tuned each TV channel button to each of the 3,4 or 5 UHF colour TV channels, which started to become available from the late 1960s onwards.

In 1998 terrestrial digital TV was launched which allowed for hundreds of TV channels to be broadcast from places like the Winter Hill mast, which transmits to this part of the country, and 15 years later the analogue TV channels were switched off LINK before that the VHF black and white TV channels were switched off in 1985 and in about ten years time, maybe sooner the Winter Hill TV mast will be switched off

By then you will only be able to watch terrestrial TV via the internet, that is another reason why Open Reach are slowly but surely switching off standard land line phone lines, and switching the phone lines over to a broadband only connection, requiring folk to have a broadband router, to which the telephone will have to be plugged into, that is so that all properties with a BT/Open Reach phone line, will be able to keep on receiving free terrestrial TV when the TV masts are switched off.

At the moment each of the five main free TV channels have their own way for you to receive their live TV via the internet.

BBC1 - iPlayer
BBC2 - iPlayer
ITV - ITVX
Channel 4 - channel4.com
Channel 5 - channel5.com

But to streamline the move to online TV only, the main five terrestrial TV channels have got together to produce just one way to receive the online TV channels, and like Freeview distribute terrestrial TV by TV masts like Winter Hill, a new service which is called 'Freely' will distribute the Freeview content by the internet LINK new TV's will have 'Freely' built in to them, so that to use it you either plug your TV into the internet via a cable to your router or by wi-fi to your router, so basically instead of plugging an aerial into the back of your TV you will plug in your phone line (via a broadband router) instead.

So surely that will alter the way that programs are broadcast, because I think that those five main free TV channels will just morph into platforms like Netflix etc and you will just pick and choose what to watch when you want to watch it, including everything on the BBC who has far as I am concerned can go and shove their license fee up their left wing biased, white folk hating, minorities loving, bottom

But will it involve having to pay a subscription equal or even more to that of the television license to fund it and also a futher subscription to avoid having to watch on all channels, the advertisements?

Why should the BBC charge for their channels The other channels pay for themselves by advertisement's. Thinking about it the only programme I have watched on the BBC in the last few months is Gardening World

I watch about 70% bbc and I think it is cheap compared to sky. The comedy on bbc is far superior to other channels and I prefer comedy to dramas.

As rio caroni has intimated, you don't know what you are missing for the sum of 46.5 per day which apart from funding the BBC is also a license for having a colour receiver to see all channels and programmes on what ever you use to watch television!

OC if you do not watch any BBC programmes you still have your COLOUR TV to watch anything you want. Half of the trouble with most TV channels they show repeats after repeats but the BBC seems to be one of the worst offenders for this. They also used to show a lot of B/W pictures dating back to the 40/50's we are in 2024 Another problem is with over 100 channels on Freeview 24/7 what do they fill the time with

Whups

On this topic, I agree with you and if anyone is content to just have just Freeview with the linited number of channels, more fool them!

My only concern about the two main companies is that with the amount of sport, especially the increased showing of football interruping the pleasure of others not interested in sport, surely the time has come for both the BBC and ITV to have a dedicated sport channel.
